I have been making this apple butter for years, and it is my favorite autumn preserve. I enjoy sharing it with my family and friends, and it also makes a wonderful Christmas gift.
What you will need -
6 lbs of apples, I like to get a mix of Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honeycrips and macintosh
1 cup of cane sugar
1 cup of Brown Sugar
3 tablespoons of cinnamon
Ten to Cloves
1 1/2 tablespoon of Maple syrup
Additionally, you will require a crockpot.
Water Bath
Pint jars with new lids. Make sure your jars are sterilized and clean
Jar Lifter
Blender or wisk
You are going to wash, peel and core the apples
Cut apples into small chucks
Next mix sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves in a bowl
Layer apples and sugar mix in your crock pot
Pour the maple syrup on top.
Let cook for 10 hours on low heat.
7. Once the 10 hours have passed, your apples should have turned a nice brown to golden brown color. You can then use a blender or whisk to mash the apples into a butter-like consistency.
8. Pour the hot apple butter into jars, making sure to leave a 1/4-inch space from the top.
9. Take a butter knife and remove air bubbles. Wipe jar rim. place lid on jar finger tight.
When placing jars in the water bath, utilize the jar lifter and process for 15 minutes. For 1/2 pint jars, process for 10 minutes.
After completing the processing, use a jar lifter to remove the jars from the water bath and place them on a dish towel. Allow them to sit for 24 hours. Then label and store.
I hope you enjoy this recipe, it is truly one of my favorites.
