Despite the return of autumn, a delightful season, I must admit that winter has a special significance for me. I am eagerly looking forward to the snowfall and the long, cold nights that lie ahead. Having certain foods available during this time will be beneficial for the upcoming winter days.
Preparing for the winter season involves a lot of tasks. I engage in canning activities starting from early fall until the end of the season. During early fall, I usually create a list of items that I need to can or freeze.
My Canning Checklist
chicken soup
beef stew
cranberry juice
apple butter
pickles
green beans
peaches
tomatoe sauce
salsa
Although I usually enjoy canning strawberry jam in late summer, I didn't do it this year.
My Freezing Checklist
curry
chilli
whole cranberries
onion bread
granola
My List of Things to Dry
Camomlie
pepperment
lemon balm
spearmint
red onions
scallions
strawberries
banana chips
apples
pumkin seeds
I enjoy preserving food through canning as it allows me to control the ingredients. Living in a region with harsh winter conditions, sudden storms are common, so having homemade meals readily available provides comfort and convenience.
Can canning save you money? Well, it depends on whether you are a beginner or not. You should take into account the expenses associated with the canning tools required.
For beginners in canning, it is recommended to begin with the boiling water bath method, as it is easier to use and offers versatility. Once you gain experience, you can progress to using a pressure cooker canner.
You may find jars at a thrift store, but you will need to purchase new lids and bands. Always remember to wash and sterilize your jars and lids before using them.
Using a Mason Jar Lifter, Funnel, Tongs, Bubble Popper, and Magnetic Lid Lifter can be both convenient and cost-effective.
Initially, there will be some expenses, but in the long run, you will end up saving money through canning.
After acquiring this book, I discovered some new recipes that I am eager to experiment with this autumn to see if we enjoy them. Among them is a fantastic recipe for sweet potatoes. I plan to test out five new recipes this fall, knowing that if they are not successful, it's no big deal. However, if they turn out well, I will add them to my canning list for next year's fall season.
